How to prepare your dancers for SWDC auditions.

1. Get mentally prepared
Talk your dancer through the process. They’ll check in at the front desk, get a number to pin on and then go warm themselves up in Studio X. Be sure to tell them that you aren’t allowed to watch (it’s a closed audition!) and you’ll either pick them up after or wait in the lobby. Once auditions start, we’ll teach a short dance that they will have about 30 minutes to learn. We’ll take a few water breaks, but for the most part we’ll be dancing the whole time. Then, they will perform the dance they’ve learned for the teachers in smaller groups. Don’t worry about getting all the steps perfectly – we’re mostly looking for positive attitudes, willingness to learn and the ability to stay focused.
2. Pick out a fun audition outfit!
You should be in dress code for either ballet or jazz. Pick something that you feel confident and comfortable in. Be sure that your tights are free of any rips, you have the correct shoes and have your hair done neatly. You want to present the best version of yourself! We also recommend picking something that stands out. Bright colors, fun patterns or a fancy leotard – your goal is to be noticed! Lay everything out and pack your bag the night before so you don’t feel rushed when getting ready.
3. Get lots of rest & fuel your body
Get a good night’s sleep the night before. Be sure to eat breakfast and lunch on Saturday morning and drink lots of water! Dancers ask a lot of their bodies – we need to take good care of ourselves!
4. Calm those nerves!
Feeling nervous is totally normal, and it’s actually a good thing – it means that dance is important to you! Do your best to stay present and focused. remember that the teachers in auditions are routing for you! We want to see you succeed. We’ll be focused on the best parts of your audition and you should be too. When learning choreography, don’t stress over getting every step perfect, but make sure you go full out on the ones you really know. It always helps to take a few deep breaths or say some affirmations in the morning. Renaming your nervousness is helpful too – think of it as excitement instead and it won’t feel so overwhelming. Just remember – you got this and we’re already proud of you for showing up!
5. Be yourself!
Show us what you do best! We can’t wait to see you SHINE!
