What does it take to be a Studio W Dance Company dancer? Passion, drive and strength – both mental & physical! SWDC Flare is our competitive hip hop dance team and these dancers work HARD. They’re required to take hip hop and one other class in addition to a rehearsal session each week. We attend a few local events throughout the year, then compete at three competitions in the spring and finish it off with the Studio W showcase in July.

SWD realizes that the ability to dance competitively requires a lot of privilege and want to make this incredible experience accessible to as many dancers as possible. We set up multiple fundraisers throughout the season to help offset the costs of competition fees, and in some cases we may even be able to provide a scholarship.

Why compete? Because it opens avenues for continuing dance into adulthood and helps us refine our skills and artistry. Dance first and foremost an artform, but taking our art to competition allows us to get feedback from the most qualified artists and coaches in the industry. We get to hear an outside perspective and then work hard to apply critiques and improve our skills. The Studio W philosophy on competing is that we never go just to win. We’re there to learn, meet other dancers and professionals, and dance till we drop – if we win or place in the process, that’s just a bonus!

Dancing as part of a team is a blast. You’ll learn to be accountable, responsible and kind. You’ll make lifelong friendships and grow so much as a dancer.
